Carly Pearce reworked the lyrics of another artist’s breakup ballad with a different perspective.
Pearce shared her rendition of the song on TikTok on Tuesday (June 10), replying to a TikToker who commented, “Imma need Carly Pearce to remake this in the woman’s POV [point of view].” Pearce said in her caption that “y’all liked this comment over 3,000 times, so I had to do it.”
In the video, Pearce sings a cappella: “You pushed, I pulled/ I should’ve just made the move/ But you did what you always do, you always do/ Oh, I wanted to talk, but you walked away/ Didn’t wanna hear what I had to say/ Stupid you, can’t believe you never knew/ Oh the whole time/ I was just tryin’ to love you.”
Peace’s version is reminiscent of Jason Aldean’s “Tryin’ to Love Me,” a breakup ballad that appeared on his 15-track record, Old Boots, New Dirt, in 2014. that album also included “Just Gettin’ Started,” “Burnin’ It Down,” “Tonight Looks Good on You” and more. Aldean sings in the original version: “I pushed and you pulled/ Should have just fell into you/ But I did what I always do, I always do/ Wanted to talk but I walked away/ Didn't want to hear what you had to say/ Stupid me, can't believe I never knew/ The whole time, you were just trying to love me.”
Some TikTokers tagged Aldean, and others suggested the two artists team up on a duet of the 2014 song; however, Aldean has not commented and neither artist has hinted at a collaboration in the works as of publication time on Wednesday (June 11).
