Emmy Russell has “been singing this song every day,” she said as she shared her cover of an Ella Langley single on Instagram on Monday (December 8).

Russell, who was a finalist on American Idol last year and is Loretta Lynn’s granddaughter, posted her rendition of Langley’s “Choosin’ Texas.” Langley teamed up with Miranda LambertLuke Dick and Joybeth Taylor to write the ballad, which made its debut in October. The single with a classic country sound sees the singer on a barstool by herself while a cowboy moves on with another woman on the dance floor.

“Just when I thought I got him to fall in love with Tennessee/ I shoulda known better than to take him back to Abilene/ I put him right back into her arms/ I wasn’t a match for that kinda spark/ She’s from Texas I can tell by the way/ He’s two steppin round the room/ And judgin by the smile that’s written on his face/ There’s nothin I can to do/ It doesn’t take a crystal ball to see/ A cowboy always finds a way to leave/ Drinkin Jack all by myself/ He’s choosin’ Texas I can tell”

“Choosin’ Texas” follows Langley’s cover of late country star Toby Keith’s “Wish I Didn’t Know Now,” and her summer single, “Never Met Anyone Like You.” Her latest project is the deluxe edition of her debut studio album, still hungover. That 19-track album includes the title track, “better be tough,” “paint the town blue,” “weren’t for the wind” and more, plus “you look like you love me” with fellow Alabama-born country artist Riley Green. Russell’s most recent release is “That Girl,” which arrived last month, following “Phone Call to Heaven,” “Redemption,” “London Bridges,” “Beautiful Things” and other previously-released songs.
