Solo Sees Lower Than Expected Box Office Returns

The Force is not strong with this one.

Disney and Lucasfilm's Solo: A Star Wars Story came in well behind expectations at the box office over the Memorial Day weekend the Hollywood Reporter said. The latest entry in the Star Wars universe took in $83 million over its three-day debut, which is worse than what forecasts expected the movie to earn. Globally, the news was even worse, with Solo earning a disappointing $148 million, where many thought the movie might blast off to $300 million, despite the fact that Star Wars has never been a big player in international markets.

The Han Solo picture paced well behind its fellow standalone movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which brought in $155 million during its opening weekend in North America.

The competition at the box office was strong over the weekend as Deadpool 2 in its second week of release brought in a projected $53.5 million and Avengers: Infinity War, in its fourth week, earned $20 million over the four-day holiday.

The movie stars Alden Ehrenreich as Solo opposite Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, Donald Glover, Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Paul Bettany. It tells the story of how Han Solo met and teamed up with Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian. Ron Howard took over directing duties from Christopher Miller and Phil Lord when they were fired by Lucasfilm's Kathleen Kennedy because of "creative differences."
